How to Clean a
Fedora Hat
Fedora hats were
highly popular in the early twentieth century. These hats are typically composed
of felt material and have what is called a C-crown, or a place for the head to
fit into the top of the hat. Fedoras have a distinct shape that is easily
recognized. The tops are creased and the front is pinched on both sides.
Cleaning a fedora hat is easy as long as you know how to take proper care of the
hat's materials and shape.
Wash and dry your
hands.
Step 2: Hold the fedora by the front or back brim.
Step 3: Brush the fedora very gently all over the outside of the hat. Begin on
the left side and move the hat around until you have brushed it completely.
Step 4: Use a lint roller to remove small pieces of lint, hair or fuzz.
Step 5: Rub stains and spots gently with a damp washcloth.
Step 6: Dry the fedora by using a blow dryer on the lowest heat setting. You can
also let your hat air dry on its own.
Tips & Warnings
Take your fedora for a professional cleaning to get rid of tough stains or sweat
marks.
How to Reshape
a Wool Fedora
Reshaping a wool
fedora hat can be done using steam. Wool is known for its memory, and many
fedora hats will return to their original shape once you steam them. Wash and
dry your hands thoroughly before working with the hat or you risk leaving finger
prints behind once it dries.
Instructions
Step 1: Boil water in tea kettle. A tea kettle provides a consistent amount of
steam and it's easy to work the fedora hat through it.
Step 2: Wash your hands thoroughly and dry them before you reshape your hat. You
want to remove any oils and dirt from your skin or you risk trapping it in the
wool.
Step 3: Begin by correcting the crease at the top of the hat, known as the
pinch. Move the hat through the steam until it's relaxed enough for you to
gently maneuver it back into position.
Step 4: Allow the pinch to dry thoroughly before moving on to the brim of the
hat. By letting it dry, you avoid altering the corrections you just made while
working with the brim of your fedora hat.
Step 5: Relax the wool by moving the hat through the steam and gently pull and
roll your brim until you've achieved the proper shape. Take your time with this
step to shape the hat correctly.
Step 6: Let your fedora hat to air dry thoroughly. While this can take several
days, it's the only way to safely dry your hat.
Step 7: Gently brush your fedora hat with a hat brush the same color as the
wool. Store it in a hat box with tissue paper stuffed inside the hat and brim to
support the proper shape.
